THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND
is the state’s flagship university and one of the world’s top
public research institutions. Our 12 colleges and schools offer
more than 300 academic degrees to a diverse, inclusive and
multicultural community of over 40,000 undergraduate and
graduate students.
We’re addressing the grand challenges of our time through
a robust scientific enterprise that leads in areas including
climate change, public health equity, artificial intelligence, and
quantum science and technology. Together with the University
of Maryland, Baltimore, our $1.4 billion in research expenditures
ranks 11th among U.S. public universities.
We’re also the nation’s first Do Good Campus, engaging the
entire student body in courses, competitions and other
opportunities to become the next generation of global citizens
who are making a difference.
Located just four miles from Washington, D.C., UMD gives
students unparalleled opportunities inside the classroom and
beyond. Terps can intern or conduct research at nearby federal
agencies, labs and cultural centers such as NASA’s Goddard
Space Flight Center and the Smithsonian Institution.
Closer to home, we’re expanding the Greater College Park
initiative, a $2 billion public-private effort to bring in new housing,
retail and other amenities, develop a robust Discovery District
and create one of the nation’s best college towns.
Our campus, founded in 1856, is built around a central mall,
anchored by McKeldin Library and the Thomas V. Miller, Jr.
Administration Building. In all, 250-plus buildings are spread
across more than 1,300 acres.
This guide will help you explore the campus and learn about mustsee attractions, student life, recreational activities and more.
Enjoy your visit!
