Today, Maryland offers 20 intercollegiate
sports: 12 for women and eight for men.
More than 500 student athletes compete
each year at the top level of college
athletics, most of them as members of the
National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) Division I teams.
Eight Terrapin programs have combined
to win 47 national championships,
from the football team in 1953 to the
2022 men’s lacrosse team finishing with
a perfect 18-0 record to earn its 13th
national title. Maryland is one of just
two schools in history to have won the
NCAA championship in both men’s and
women’s basketball. Since joining the Big
Ten Conference in 2014, UMD has racked
up 49 regular season and tournament
championships, which ranks third among
all of the conference’s schools in that span.
